What Is 50/70 ?

Welcome to a new era of baseball at Llanerch Hills as we are proud to continue 11/12 year old 50/70 baseball for the upcoming spring 2014 season.  50/70 baseball was created by the Cal Ripken baseball association to make the transition to 13 year old baseball easier for players.  50/70 refers to the distance of the pitchers (50’) mound and base path (70’).  Prior to this year our Majors division participated in 46/60.  Once the boys graduate from Llanerch Hills turning 13 years old, moving forward they play 60/90 baseball that is on a regulation sized major league infield whether it is middle school baseball, varsity CYO or UDHL.

Playing 50/70 has other benefits in addition to being an easier transition for field size. 50/70 raises the level of play by changing the rules to mirror 60/90 baseball with base runner leads.  This now brings into play the pitchers having to hold runners, pick-off moves and balks.  It effectively changes the game from stealing on the catcher, to stealing on the pitcher making the games true baseball.

The addition of this program is a natural fit to the Llanerch Hills philosophy of advancing from each division by making each age group one step closer to true baseball.  It also gives players who participate in a 50/70 program an advantage when moving to a 60/90 team.

We can tell you from first hand experience that once the kids play one 50/70 game, they do not want to go back.  Players feel like they are in the big leagues because they are playing on a larger, more age appropriate sized infield with big league rules and regulations.
